Northern Hawk Owl
Size - 14 1/2 to 17 1/2 inches long Habitat - Open coniferous and birch forests. Nesting - They nest is a in an abandoned nest of crow or hawk or a tree cavity.. Eggs - 3 to 7, white. Incubation 21 to 28 days, largely by the female. Young leave the nest 25 to 35 days after hatching. Food - Rodents, birds, and large insects. |
Snowy Owl
Size - 19 to 25 inches long. Habitat - Open areas, dunes, and marshes; nests on Arctic tundra. Nesting - The nest is a shallow depression in ground on tundra. Eggs - 5 to 8, up to 11 in good lemming years. Incubation 32 days, by female only. Young leave the nest 6 to 8 weeks after hatching. Sometimes 2 broods a year. Food - Various animals and birds; also carrion.. |

Short-eared Owl
Size - 12 - 16 inches long. Habitat - Fields, plains, marshes, and dunes. Nesting - Eggs are laid in shallow, grass and feather-lined depression in the ground. Eggs - 4 to 9, white. Incubation 3 weeks, by female. Young leave the nest in about 6 weeks. Several pairs may nest close together. Food - Mainly voles; also other small rodents, insects, and small birds. |
Great Gray Owl
Size - 24 - 32 inches long. Habitat - Coniferous forests in Far North; mountains in the West. Nesting - The eggs are laid in abandoned nest of a hawk or eagle or on top of a stump. Eggs - 3 to 5, white. Incubation 30 days, by female only. Young leave the nest 5 weeks after hatching, but depend on the parents for several weeks longer. Food - Primarily small animals; also crows and smaller birds. |
