Trumpeter Swans
Size - 59 to 72 inches long Habitat - Mountain lakes and rivers; some winter on coastal bays. Nesting - The nest is a mound of plant material near the shore. Eggs - 2 to 13, cream colored. Incubation 33 days, by the female. Young leave the nest soon after hatching; stay with the parents until the following spring. Food - Aquatic plants and insects. |
Tundra Swan
Size - - 47to 58 inches long. Habitat - Lakes, bays, and estuaries; nests on tundra. Nesting - The nest is a mound of leaves and grass near shore. Eggs - 2 to 7, dull white. Incubation 32 days, by female. Young leave the nest soon after hatching; stay with the parents until the following spring. Food - Aquatic plants and mollusks. |

Mute Swan
Size - 56 to 62 inches long. Habitat - Ponds and lakes in residential areas. Nesting - The nest is a mass of plant material near shore. Eggs - 4 to 6, blue-gray. Incubation 34 to 38 days, mostly by female. Young leave the nest soon after hatching; stay with parents for 4 months. Food - Aquatic plants. |
Common Merganser
Size - 21 - 27 inches long. Habitat - Wooded lakes and rivers; winters on large lakes. Nesting - The nest is a mass of down in a tree cavity, hollow log, or crevice among rocks. Eggs - 6 to 17, buff or yellowish. Incubation 28 to 32 days, by female only. Young leave the nest soon after hatching; begin to fly at 9 to 10 weeks. Food - Fish, crustaceans, mollusks, frogs, and salamanders. |
