Red-headed Woodpecker
Size - 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 inches long. Habitat - Groves, open woodlands, farmlands, and shade trees. Nesting - The nest is a cavity excavated 5-80 feet above the ground in a dead tree limb. Eggs - 4 to 7, white. Incubation about 2 weeks, by both parents. Young leave the nest 27 days after hatching. Often 2 broods a year. Food - Boring insects and nuts. |
Ring-billed Gull
Size - 18 to 20 inches long. Habitat - Sea coasts, lakes, and city parks. Nesting - The nest is a cup of grass and stems on the ground. Eggs - 2 to 4, pale brown, spotted with brown and lilac. Incubation 25 days, by both sexes. Nest in large colonies. Food - Insects and small fish; also scavengers. |

Osprey
Size - 21 to 25 inches long. Habitat - Sea coasts, lakes, and rivers. Nesting - The nest is a structure of sticks in a tree, on a bush or platform, or, rarely on the ground. Eggs - 2 to 4, pinkish or cinnamon, heavily marked with brown. Incubation 32 days, usually by the female. Young leave the nest 8 weeks after hatching. Food - Mostly fish; occasionally rodents and birds. |
Rough-legged Hawk
Size - 19 to 24 inches long. Habitat - Open areas and marshes. Nests on Arctic tundra. Nesting - The nest is a mass of twigs on a ledge. Eggs - 2 to 7, white, variably blotched with brown. Incubation 28 to 31 days. Young leave the nest about 41 days after hatching. Food - Rodents and other small animals. |
