American Goldfinch
Size - 4-5 inches long Habitat - Fields, groves, thickets, and farmlands. Nesting - The nest is a thick walled cup of plant fibers and plant down, 1 to 60 feet above the ground in a shrub or tree. Eggs - 4 to 6, blueish white and unmarked. Incubation 12 - 14 days, by the female. Young leave the nest 11- 17 days after hatching. Food - Seeds, a few insects and berries. |
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (female)
Size - 7 - 8 1/2 inches long Habitat - Bushy woods, open, and aspen groves. Nesting - The nest is a flimsy saucer of stems, twigs, and grass, 5 to 50 feet above the ground in a shrub or tree. Eggs - 3 to 5, pale blue or green, with spots and blotches of brown. Incubation about 13 days, by both parents. Young leave the nest in 9-12 days after hatching. Food - Seeds, fruits, and insects. |

Bobolink
Size - 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches long Habitat - Meadows, grainfields, and marshes. Nesting - The nest is thin-walled hunk of grass hidden on the ground in a dense tuft of grass or clover. Eggs - 4 to 7, pale gray to tan, blotched with brown and lilac. Incubation about 13 days, by female. Young leave the nest 10 to 14 days after hatching. Food - Seeds, grain, and insects. |
