Giant Panda Ailuropodo melanoleuca ( Endangered Species ) - Because of its appeal, most are interested in conserving the giant panda for future generations to enjoy.
    Giant Pandas originate from East Asia. As plant eaters, their diet consists of mainly bamboo shoots and roots. Usually solitary, a panda will feed from dawn until dusk. They grow to be about 6 feet in length, weighing between 155 and 280 pounds. The female being four fifths the size of the male. Following a 45 day gestation, one or two cubs will be born in a hollow tree or cave. Cubs are six inches long, weigh 3 5/8 ounce, and are bare. A cub will stay in the den 4 to 6 weeks, and then is carried on its mother's back. At eighteen months, it will be independent.
